Locksmith Scam
It happens daily. Someone gets locked out of their home, business, or car and jumps online or grabs a phone book to find the nearest local locksmith. They think that they are calling a company located down the road, but in actuality they have reached a dispatch center in New Jersey, who is dispatching an unqualified “technician” with no past experience and dollar symbols gleaming in their eyes.
It’s a horrible scam. The customer is vulnerable and they know this. Most people are willing to pay the outrageous price for a few reasons; they just want to get back in, they are scared of this individual, or they just don’t know the facts. Most locksmiths charge less than $100 for that service. Some people have been charged almost $2,000 by these scammers. So what can we do to stop it?
First of all, if it has already happened to you REPORT IT! Don’t just give up after you have been taken by these companies; call your local police station, the Better Business Bureau, or your local selectman. Enough complaints will eventually spark an investigation and these phonies need to be exposed.
Second, find a locksmith before you actually need one. Almost anything is possible with cell phones these days, so it’s not hard to store a phone number in your phone as “Locksmith” just in case you need one. And to actually find a legitimate one, visit legallocksmiths.com to find someone in your area. If you are in Massachusetts just call the Flying Locksmiths.
Finally, do a little research before you select a locksmith. It’s almost a definite that the first locksmith you come across will be a scam. Legitimate locksmiths are not spending nearly the amount of money on advertising as these scamming companies, so it takes a little more effort to find a real one, just dig deeper.
