Japan’s space freighter lifts off

Japan has recently launched a space shuttle headed towards the International Space Station (also known as the IIS) with a view of taking supplies to the space station. This space shuttle launch from Japan was made from their Tanegashima base, located in southern Japan.

The space shuttle launched by Japan is unmanned and is carrying supplies for the space station. The space shuttle weighs in the region of 16.5 tonnes. The shuttle also carries cargo weighing 4.5 tonnes, although can carry 6 tonnes when fully loaded.

The space shuttle from Japan will play a vital role in the maintenance of the space station as the support from the US shuttle fleet will be removed in 2010.

The unmanned Japanese space shuttle is called the H-II Transfer Vehicle or HTV for short, and is being coordinated by NASA and by Japanese space engineers in Tsukuba.The space shuttle launched by Japan is unmanned and is carrying supplies for the space station. Japanese space engineer Masazumi Miyake stated:

This HTV-1 vehicle is a demonstration flight to verify its functionality and performance.

After completion of this mission we are planning to launch one operational HTV per year on average.

The HTV is expected to dock with the International Space Station on the final day of its mission.
